Mobile City Players Go Global

Until recently, the term “mobile city players” would more than likely bring to mind people who travel from city to city playing tournaments of some sort. But in truth, mobile city players can play any game they choose, at any time and with anyone in the world using just their cell phone!

Most cell phone come pre-loaded with a few simple games such as various forms of Tetris or Solitaire. Some have puzzle-solving games and a very few come with no games but have the capability for providing them. Those that enjoy playing games on their phones can use the internet to download free ones or buy downloads to other games. Many of these are multi-player games that are increasingly popular, especially with Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth gives players the ability to play games with other people within its range. The problem with this particular technology, though, is that it limits a person to companion players within their city or the area that Bluetooth can reach. WAP, GPRS and 3G technologies can cover even greater distances.

WAP, or wireless application protocol, is the tool used by most wireless phones to access the internet. 3G provides greater network capacity and offers a wider range of advanced services, including the ability to engage in multi-player games. GPRS is the acronym for “general packet radio service” and achieves greater distance than WAP, allowing for a greater range of service. With GPRS you can engage in multi-player games with people not only in your city but in another state.

Cell phones with GPS are becoming more common now and with that feature, of course, comes scavenger games. Millions of people love this modern version of the scavenger hunt that is played not for the reward at the end of the game but for the interesting journey one takes toward the goal.

Researchers concluded that women play mobile phone games more than men, opting for card or board games which are easily adaptable to cell phones. Women also enjoy simulation games like SimCity Metropolis or the popular Tycoon series (Rollercoaster Tycoon, et al). Men, however, prefer action games which, unfortunately, require a larger viewing area to move around in. This problem is beginning to ease since many cell phone manufacturers are offering larger screens.

Simulated sports are also popular multi-player cell phone games, as are Monopoly, Yahtzee and Mahjong. Multi-player battle games like Star Wars Battle for the Republic and Avenging Angel are two of the top downloads while multi-player racing games run a close second.

Mobile city players are growing in number, thanks to the ease of downloading and competitive prices for those games. Many of them agree that multi-player games are much more enjoyable than the single player games that used to be featured on cell phones. The ability to play games with other people participating also contributes to the sale of cell phones with premium features instead of just the basics.

It’s easy and fun to be a Mobile City Player and a great way to meet people with similar interests.
